Team DMTC Projects
The
Teacher's Ride
Our
first project was to install a system in the Team Leader's (Program
Instructor-Mr Lipp) 2002 Saturn SL2. This vehicle is a "Daily
Driver" used by Mr. Lipp to get back and forth to Daniel Morgan
Technology Center from his home. This project was initially started
when a student commented "You can't be the Mobile Electronics
Instructor and not have a system in your car" - the rest is
Team
DMTC history.
Thankfully,
the Mobile Electronics Competition Association (MECA) has a division
for vehicles just like this one. Mr. Lipp was interested in sound
quality and did not want to make any major modifications to his
vehicle; this was a perfect fit for the SQL "Street" Division in the
MECA. In this division you must use the factory speaker location but
you can add door mounted tweeters and sub woofers in the trunk.
The
current system includes a Kenwood EZ-500 CD/MP3/WMA
Receiver, two sets of Kenwood KFC-1680iS 6-1/2" 2-way
Speakers , Kenwood KFC-T207 13/16" UFLC
(door-mounted) Dome
Tweeters, Kenwood KAC-7202 150W x 2 Car
Amp, 2 Kenwood
KFC-W2510 10" 4-ohm Component Subwoofers in a Q-Logic
QLH-10D65
Dual 10" Hatchback Subwoofer Box and a 1.2 Farad Tsunami Stiffening
Capacitor.
To
keep the system as portable and unobtrusive as possible, both the amp
and the stiffening capacitor were mounted to the sub-woofer enclosure.
This allows the entire bass system to be removed from the trunk if
necessary. It also, as you can see form the picture to the right,
allows for easy access to the amp controls by simply folding down the
back seat. Thanks to the Daniel Morgan Technology Center Machine Tool Shop for fabricating the aluminum stand-offs for amp & capacitor box mounting.
